Breast Reduction

Is Breast Reduction sore?

Breast reduction procedure takes 180min's, usually with a 1 night stay in hospital. Post-operatively patient feels sore for 3-5 day's for which they are given long acting local anaesthetic in theatre, painkiller's and a supportive bra. Also  patient advised to avoid lifting/carrying for 2 week's and to lie on their back (not on their sides, helped with 'wedged pillow's and/or a 'nudging partner), reclined for 2 week's also.

What to expect after Breast Reduction?
As it is performed under general anaesthetic, some nausea for 1-2 days. Soreness of the breast for 3-5 days. Dressings are waterproof so showering allowed straight away. Unwired, medicated bra is applied soon after the procedure. Arm movement's beyond shoulder abduction and flexion 90 degree's is uncomfortable for 5 day's. Walking is comfortable from day 2 post op. Can go out for a coffee/meal at 5 day's. At 7 days dressing's change with Mr Ragoowansi or his nurse. Driving allowed at 10 day's. Dressing's fully removed at day 14 and scar care program commenced together with lymphatic drainage massage and exercise.

Benefit of Breast Reduction?
Physical - neck ache, no back ache, no bra straps digging into shoulder's , no sweating rashes in the breast creases. Hence, easier to walk, run, exercise and carry out activities such as pilates, Zumba. Able to carry out all chest/shoulder activities pain free and with ease and agility. There is also evidence that reduction in the 'breast tissue load' also reduces risk of cancer.
Psychological restoration of confidence, able to wear appropriate, comfortable tops, swim ear, underwear, with ease and comfort.

How long does Breast Reduction take?
3 hour surgery, 1 night in hospital, 6-8 weeks recovery.
